NSC 103-51: Introduction to Earth Science
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS BOOKLET
Homework counts for 20% of your course grade. Because a natural science course requires you to learn a lot of new terminology, your 10 homework assignments are geological crossword puzzles designed to help you learn new vocabulary and concepts that are covered in this course. As soon as you receive this booklet, write your name on each assignment in the upper right corner, and copy the due dates on each paper according to the schedule shown below:

1. Each assignment is worth a maximum of 20 points* if handed in on the due date stamped on each puzzle. All of your homework assignments for the course are included in this packet. Due dates are shown above, so you have plenty of notice when homework is due. In case you lose one of the assignments, you may find these homework puzzles available for downloading off the Internet, at either server location:
http://www.oakton.edu/~billtong/nsc103   OR  https://wktong.tripod.com/nsc103
If you are viewing this document on the Internet, you may click on a document link (underlined text) in the above table to take you directly to that assignment.  When the document has fully loaded, click the mouse anywhere on the screen once, then click on the "Print" button on your Web browser to print yourself a copy.  Do not e-mail me your homework.  They must be handed in on campus as hard copy.

2. Homework assignments are collected promptly at the beginning of the class period on their respective due dates. Given this much advance notice, if your homework is turned in late for any reason (absences included), a late penalty of 5 points is assessed. If you are absent from class often, you are therefore advised to try to turn in homework early. Any homework over 1 week past due will receive a score of zero.
3. Early-Bird Bonus! *If you hand in a completed homework assignment at least one day before it is due, you may earn up to 5 extra points (up to 50 total bonus points towards your final class grade). Your homework must be turned in at least one day early to earn the extra credit. You may do any of the following: 1) hand in the assignment during the preceding class date, 2) drop it off at least one day early at the Faculty Support Office, Room B206; they must date stamp your homework, or 3) fax your homework assignment at least one day before the due date to the Faculty Support Office at (847) 635-1496 - be sure to address it to "W. Tong, Room B206 - Faculty Support." (Faxed assignments must be legible, or they won't be graded.)

Tips for completing the assignments
1. Don't rush to complete all the crosswords at one time! Not all of the answers are in your textbook - some are topics and concepts that you can pick up only by attending the lectures, so take good notes, and ask questions.  By the same token, don't start doing your crosswords at the last minute.   If you are completely stumped about some words, please contact me at (312) 886-9380 and we can discuss them.

2. Use pencil, not pen or magic marker, to fill in the crossword puzzles. Avoid scratch-outs/liquid paper.

3. Don't use wild guesses or "creative" (that is, incorrect) spelling to try to fit in a word.

4. Your instructor will attempt to grade and return your homework as promptly as possible. However, it is a good idea to photocopy your crosswords before handing them in while studying for your exams.
