EAS 100, Section 51: Introduction to Earth Science
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS BOOKLET
Homework counts for 20% of your course grade, and is NOT optional - it has the same amount of credit as 2 exams.   Because a natural science course requires you to learn a lot of new terminology, your 10 homework assignments are scientific crossword puzzles designed to help you learn new vocabulary and concepts that are covered in this course.  Use the printable PDF download links below to print out each homework assignment, write your name on each assignment in the upper right corner, and copy the due dates on each paper according to the schedule shown below.  Use a scanner or take a photo of your homework with your smart phone and e-mail by or before the due date.  Click the link at the right for helpful HOMEWORK TIPS

1. Each assignment is worth a maximum of 20 points* if handed in on the due date stamped on each puzzle. All of your homework assignments for the course are included in this packet. Due dates are shown above, so you have plenty of notice when homework is due. In case you lose one of the assignments, you may find these homework puzzles available for downloading off the Internet, at either server location:
http://www.oakton.edu/~billtong/eas100/   OR  http://wktong.tripod.com/eas100/
If you are viewing this document on the Internet, you may click on a document link (underlined text) in the above table to take you directly to that assignment.  When the document has fully loaded, click the mouse anywhere on the screen once, then click on the "Print" button on your Web browser to print yourself a copy.
2. Homework assignments are due on the respective date listed in the schedule above. Given this much advance notice, if your homework is turned in late for any reason (absences included), a late penalty of 5 points is assessed. If you are absent from class often, you are therefore advised to try to turn in homework early. Any homework over 1 week past due will receive a score of zero.
3. Early-Bird Bonus!  If you submit a completed homework assignment at least one day before it is due, you may earn up to 5 extra points (up to 50 total bonus points towards your final class grade). Your homework must be dated (e-mail sent) at least one day early to earn the extra credit. The homework is not interactive in any way; you must print out each puzzle and clue sheet (single-sided only), completed them, scan or photograph with your smart phone, and e-mail your homework with the subject of the e-mail containing the word "Homework #__."  Submitted assignments must be legible, or they won't be graded.

Tips for completing the assignments
1. Don't rush to complete all the crosswords at one time! Not all of the answers are in your textbook - some are topics and concepts that you can pick up only by attending the lectures, so take good notes, and ask questions. Do not wait until the last minute or work on them during lecture. If you are completely stumped about some words, please e-mail me at wktong@comcast.net and we can discuss them to get you "unstuck."
2. Use pencil, not pen or magic marker, to fill in the crossword puzzles. Avoid scratch-outs/liquid paper.
3. Don't use wild guesses or "creative" (that is, deliberately incorrect) spelling to try to fit in a word.
4. Your instructor will attempt to grade and return your homework as promptly as possible. However, it is a good idea to photocopy your crosswords before handing them in while studying for your exams.
